Human multitasking

چکیده
Humanmultitasking is the apparent performance by an individual of handling more than one task, or activity, at the same time. The term is derived from computer multitasking. An example of multitasking is taking phone calls while typing an email. Multitasking can result in time wasted due to human context switching and apparently causing more errors due to insufficient attention. However, studies have shown that some people can be trained to multitask where changes in brain activity have been measured as improving performance of multiple tasks (see below: The brain’s role). Multitasking can also be assisted with coordination techniques, such as taking notes periodically, or logging current status during an interruption to help resume a prior task midway.

Individual Differences in Multitasking Ability and Adaptability
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify the cognitive factors that predictability and adaptability during multitasking with a flight simulator. BACKGROUND Multitasking has become increasingly prevalent as most professions require individuals to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Considerable research has been undertaken to identify the characteristics of people (i.e., individual d...
متن کاملAn approach towards multitasking in ACT-R/PM
In human-machine-interaction, interruptability and resumption of different tasks are common aspects to influence human performance. To understand human behavior in such situations, we conducted a multitasking experiment where subjects had to perform a test of attention when driving. In this paper, we present an ACT-R/PM model on how people perform the test of attention (secondary task of multit...
متن کاملMultitasking across generations: Multitasking choices and difficulty ratings in three generations of Americans
This study investigated whether changes in the technological/social environment in the United States over time have resulted in concomitant changes in the multitasking skills of younger generations. One thousand, three hundred and nineteen Americans from three generations were queried to determine their at-home multitasking behaviors. An anonymous online questionnaire asked respondents to indic...
متن کاملInformation and non-information multitasking interplay
This paper explores and speculates on a new direction in human information behavior (HIB) research. We explore the nature of HIB as a multitasking activity, the interplay between information behavior and non-information behavior tasks, and the relation between multitasking information behavior to cognitive style and individual differences. A model of multitasking between information and non-inf...
متن کاملMultitasking information seeking and searching processes
Recent studies show that humans engage in multitasking behaviors as they seek and search information retrieval (IR) systems for information on more than one topic at the same time. For example, a Web search session by a single user may consist of searching on single topics or multitasking. Findings are presented from four separate studies of the prevalence of multitasking information seeking an...
